Hybrid (dual fuel)
A heat pump for most of the year, your furnace for the coldest nights
A hybrid system pairs a heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating and cooling until a set outdoor temperature, usually between −10°C and −15°C, then the furnace takes over. It suits gas-heated GTA homes whose furnace is still young or whose ducts can't carry an all-electric load.

Hybrid or all-electric? Our honest take
If your furnace is under 8 years old, adding a heat pump and keeping the furnace is usually the cheaper move. If both are near end of life, an all-electric cold-climate system often costs less to own over 15 years. We model both on the same quote. Note: Ontario's rebate covers the heat pump only, not the backup furnace, and the federal rebate's treatment of hybrid systems isn't confirmed yet.
